It won’t be long till we all get to see the new options in the coming update. Sure it's rough around the edges, but compared to a lot of early access indie bloat out there on Steam for similar pricing Blackwake's sitting at 90 positive with 6k reviews. If you don’t have Alpha access like myself, don’t worry! Plenty of YouTube let’s players do. Considering it's our first game and that we had a very small budget to work with, I think we've done pretty damn good. I can’t wait to see the new range of player customizations in the next update. These developers seem to have a lot of respect for their backers and often set examples for other indie developers. Blackwake Alpha V2.1 Release Trailer Thumbnail. Blackwake sets the bar high for Kickstarter conduct and backer-developer communication. Blackwake is a multiplayer team-based shooter centered around naval. It’s great that the developers are taking criticism so seriously, however, it is expected. So, gender selection will be available in the Alpha 4 update. Here’s the tweet:įemale support coming with alpha 4 (Don’t worry, better hair on the way!) #gamedev #indiegaming #gaming /JIbfONnkbK The developers tweeted in response to my article. ![]() It seems that the developers must be among our readers. In my article, I lament a little that the options are currently limited to male pirates. Character customization is a big deal because it helps players to distinguish fellow crewmates and is just a fun element. The game features epic real time battles where players must work cooperatively to fight enemy ships. This Alpha includes a host of features like avatar customization. But be warned, it is still in Alpha so it is by no means the finished article.Recently, I wrote an article about Blackwake‘s latest Alpha. If you have some spare time and like being shouted at in a pirate accent then I would urge you to check out Blackwake. Although that’s as far as it goes in regards to mutinies, none of that HMS Bounty stuff. Anyone can elect themselves captain and if the crew don’t like you, they can vote to mutiny and remove you from the captaincy. Everyone can do any job from repairing ship to loading and firing the cannons. What I like about this game is, apart from the captain, there is no forced classes. There is a treasure hunt mode similar to capture the flag but with treasure and island forts. It’s win/win, baby.īut it’s not all ship to ship battles, ala Master and Commander. Loading a cannon 20XP, manning the pump 20XP, disintegrating the crew of a passing ship with grapeshot 300XP. I’m starting to get used to this.īlackwake is a multiplayer naval FPS where the accents are outrageous and you need work together to stay alive and, more importantly, stay afloat. The screen goes black and I’m dead - again. I respawn and find that pirates have boarded our ship and I get shot in the head. I’m dead and the beloved HMS PinkPinkUnicorn is full of holes and sinking fast. I get the ship in my sights and then I am catapulted 30 feet into the air and land in the water with a heavy splash. ![]() The captain is issuing orders in a shrill public-school boy accent as we come to engage the enemy ship, which is fucking massive. Normally, I would be sipping some form of alcoholic beverage with an umbrella in it, but instead I’m shovelling powder and shot into a hot cannon in eager anticipation of blowing a hole in the side of an enemy ship. It’s a hot and sunny day in the Caribbean. ![]()
